In 1999, with passion and determination, a dream was born as Ted Mercer founded the Mercer Group, a company specializing in the meticulous craft of building and maintaining sports fields. That dream ignited a journey that would span 25 years and is still going strong today.
Nestled in Troy, Ohio, the Mercer Group found its roots and thrived within the fabric of the Troy community. Ted’s vision was to not only build and maintain the highest quality athletic fields for his customers throughout the area, but also to give back, cultivate dreams, and transform run-down spaces into parks and fields where youth could play.
Since its founding, the Mercer Group has built and maintained more than 100 athletic fields. A particular field that stands out is the aptly named Mercer Group Field at Trostel Park. As part of the commitment to his hometown and to giving back, Ted and his son Troy approached the city in 2011 to reclaim a dilapidated baseball field in Trostel Park and build and maintain a new field for the city. The Mercer Group team approached this work the same as they do every job – with passion, dedication, and a commitment to excellence.
That same commitment to quality workmanship is evident in how they run their business. Decades ago, as a new business owner, Ted knew that he needed an accounting firm he could count on to help guide him on his entrepreneurial journey. Flagel Huber Flagel became their accounting partner and have been working with Mercer ever since as a trusted go-to for all financial needs.
While he knows less about baseball and athletic field design and maintenance, Derek Koester, the FHF partner working with Mercer Group, knows plenty about entrepreneurial accounting. He has guided the Mercer Group through multiple processes throughout the years including quarterly and annual payroll compliance, corporate tax compliance, bookkeeping, personal taxes, Employee Retention Credit, navigating the Paycheck Protection Program, and importantly the beginning stages of transitioning ownership to the next generation of leadership as Ted’s son, Troy, is stepping up to take over the business. As part of this generational transition, Derek is working with Ted and Troy to do the appropriate business valuations to ensure the transition goes smoothly. Says Troy, “I know Derek will be able to help me with any question related to the financial side of things. His knowledge, responsiveness and availability have been reassuring as I prepare to take over the company from my dad.”
Derek shares, “It has been great seeing the Mercer Group thrive as a company but also as a part of the Troy community. I have been able to help them with many aspects of their business, but I’m most proud of the strong partnership we’ve built and to be even a small part of this company that cares and does so much for the people of Troy.”
